A Special Message from CEO Wanda Skerrett

Tuesday, July 03, 2018

On 21 June, I, along with hundreds of other business and community leaders, slept rough at White Bay Cruise Terminal Rozelle in Sydney to help raise important funds and awareness about the issue of homelessness in Australia. The night was cold, the ground hard and the sleeping bag way wet on the outside--a reality check!! During the night, I listened to some of those affected by homelessness—those courageous enough to share their experiences and who, with the help of Vinnies, came out the other side having replaced utter despair with complete gladness. I am deeply moved and feel privileged that, even in a small way, I have contributed to those ‘despair to gladness’ journeys. My eyes welled with tears reading the high statistics of women, young adults and young children without a safe place to call home…surely and especially, a child’s right to a ‘safe placed called home’ should be upheld as sacrosanct.

Homelessness increased by 14% between 2011 and 2016 with 116,000+ people with no permanent home. That means for every 10,000 Australians, 50 are homeless. Estimates reveal that 70,000+ are under 35 more than half are women and many with children, all of whom do not have a safe place to call home!!

Funds raised from the Vinnies CEO Sleepout go directly to Vinnies homeless services around Australia for men, women and children helping to break the cycle of homelessness.

As part of the ‘Spatial’ community I would like to try and give back. The night is not only sleeping rough, it is also about business and community leaders pooling resources and focusing on identifying ways to break the homelessness cycle.

Please, make my night worthwhile by jumping online and donating. Being involved and pushing the comfort zones in the name of a good cause makes a difference to Vinnies being able to provide the assistance they do!

Thank you,
