San Francisco Department of Public Works engineers

Sacramento, Calif. , Nov 22, 2006 - Open Spatial, Inc. today announced the successful deployment of the second phase of the Munsys Public works solution in the San Francisco Department of Public Works (SFDPW) using Munsys Query. Following on from a highly successful first phase where off the shelf Munsys applications are being used to capture, manage and maintain the city storm and sewer infrastructure data, the second phase for "query users" enables engineers to retrieve geospatial information from Oracle directly into AutoCAD using a single icon. This unprecedented level of data availability provided by Munsys Query enables engineers to retrieve data into AutoCAD for a new project in a matter of minutes, whereas previously it used to take nearly five hours to gather base map information for a new project.

San Francisco is located on a unique and beautiful peninsula, the full extent of which is in large part completely developed. This however presents its own challenges for engineers and contributes to the nature of the engineering projects undertaken. Most of the 300 to 400 annual SFDPW engineering projects are for the rehabilitation and improvement of existing infrastructure.

As a result of the first phase of the Munsys implementation SFDPW now has a single seamless Engineering / GIS dataset for the entire city in Oracle. This central database is maintained by personnel assigned with edit rights using the full Munsys Applications.

The deployment of Munsys Query in phase two has provided a cost effective application for all SFDPW engineers to effortlessly gain access to the most up to date information. By connecting to the database they can now load the latest fully attributed infrastructure data directly into AutoCAD, Autodesk Map 3D, Autodesk Land Development Desktop or Autodesk Civil 3D. When initiating a new project, engineers simply open their Autodesk product of choice, connect to the database, specify an area of interest and click a single icon to get a fully attributed base drawing through Munsys Query.

In addition, users in other city organisations like the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission are also now able to query and view engineering data in AutoCAD directly from the same Oracle data source while the GIS group using ESRI's ArcSDE also have a direct connection to the Munsys data in Oracle. Having a single source of reference data controlled by each appropriate group, and that other groups can read directly, saves a lot of time and ensures the latest data is being used.

" The combination of Munsys edit and query applications, Oracle's spatial capabilities and Autodesk's powerful design platform has set new expectations for solution cost, productivity and data availability in our organisation " says Greg Braswell, IT and GIS Manager, San Francisco Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering" It's no longer a dream to have direct data access to each other's data sets using the desired CAD or GIS application. We now have engineers maintaining engineering drawings in a single seamless database using CAD while GIS users can view that data directly without any intermediate steps. The Munsys solution using Oracle and Autodesk technologies has successfully bridged the gap between CAD and GIS, enabling a new level of efficiency and data availability in San Francisco".
